Nonapeptide-1 is a mimetic peptide that matches very well with the MC1 receptor on melanocytes and therefore acts as an antagonist to pro-melanocyte hormones, competitively binding to the MC1 receptor and preventing further activation of the tyrosinase enzyme to produce melanin.
