Semaglutide is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist that primarily functions through several mechanisms: increasing insulin release, reducing glucagon release, delaying gastric emptying, and decreasing appetite. It is widely used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity as an effective medication. The forms of Semaglutide include subcutaneous injections (such as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes and Wegovy for obesity) and oral tablets (such as Rybelsus).
Compared to other similar medications, Semaglutide has advantages such as a longer injection cycle, fewer side effects, and lower costs.
Market Analysis
In the obesity market, patients can be divided into four types: those who need to eat more to feel full (brain hunger type), those who eat normal portions but quickly feel hungry again (gut hunger type), those who eat due to emotions (emotional hunger type), and those with a slower metabolism (slow metabolism type). Among these, obesity patients of the gut hunger type respond best to new weight-loss medications.
Obesity has now become a global epidemic, with prevalence rates continuing to rise in various countries. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), 13% of adults worldwide suffer from obesity. Obesity can also lead to metabolic syndrome and a series of complications such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. In this vast weight-loss market, Semaglutide has been in high demand due to its excellent weight loss effects and good safety profile.
Influence
Semaglutide was initially used to control diabetes. In the summer of 2021, the FDA approved it for chronic weight management, making it a revolutionary product in the weight loss market. Recently, due to its influence on social media, Semaglutide has become a public topic. It has been recognized as a "miracle weight-loss drug" by global political and business celebrities, with hashtags like Semaglutide amassing billions of views on TikTok. Many celebrities have publicly acknowledged and used Semaglutide to lose weight.
1、Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson shared his personal experience using Semaglutide. He witnessed significant weight loss changes in his colleagues and became interested in their visible physical transformations. After consulting a doctor, he was introduced to Semaglutide, an extraordinary drug. Johnson revealed that after starting Semaglutide, he noticed a significant reduction in appetite and fewer meals. Within a few weeks of starting the Semaglutide regimen, he saw a noticeable decrease in his appetite and food intake, effortlessly putting aside cravings for pudding and second helpings.
2、Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk mentioned in October 2022 on Twitter that he used Semaglutide to achieve successful weight loss transformation. On October 1, a fan of the South African businessman uploaded a photo of him and asked what his "secret" to weight loss was. "Fasting," Musk replied, adding, "And Wegovy (a brand name for Semaglutide)." Musk said he lost a total of 30 pounds(approximately 27.2 kg) with the help of the drug.
3、Former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson admitted that he started using Semaglutide after asking people how they stayed slim. "It turns out they all started taking a new Danish drug called Semaglutide, and when asked about it, they all spoke highly of it," he wrote in his column for The Sunday Times. "You take it once, and each time the dose increases, it reduces your appetite." Clarkson then explained that before his doctor prescribed the drug to prevent him from developing diabetes, he went to a clinic in London for blood tests and ultrasounds to ensure the drug's credibility. "It's really incredible," he wrote. "I can open the fridge, and there’s half a chicken and a bottle of Juicy Rosé, but I want neither."
